Call for applications – Communications Manager

Location: Geneva, Switzerland

Working time: 100%

Contract: permanent

The Medicines Patent Pool (MPP) is a United Nations-backed public health organisation working to increase access to, and facilitate the development of, life-saving medicines for low- and middle-income countries.

Through its innovative business model, MPP partners with civil society, governments, international organisations, industry, patient groups and other stakeholders, to prioritise and license needed medicines and pool intellectual property to encourage generic manufacture and the development of new formulations.

To date, MPP has signed agreements with eleven patent holders for thirteen HIV antiretrovirals, one HIV technology platform, three hepatitis C direct-acting antivirals, a tuberculosis treatment, a long-acting technology and an experimental oral antiviral treatment for COVID-19. In 2020, MPP’s mandate was temporarily expanded to include COVID-19 treatments. In 2021 it was expanded further to include the licensing of technology with an initial focus on COVID-19 vaccines and pandemic preparedness.

MPP was founded by Unitaid, which continues to be MPP’s main funder. MPP’s work on access to essential medicines is also funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). MPP’s activities in COVID-19 are undertaken with the financial support of the Japanese Government and SDC.


Main Duties

The Communications Manager supports the Head of Communications.

She/He is responsible for managing press engagement, working on events, writing communications materials, developing opportunities to engage and grow MPP audience, and will manage other key communications projects as required.

The communications manager will particularly provide support to the Head of Communications with regards to the mRNA vaccine Technology Transfer Hub.

Responsibilities include:

  • Engage with press and outreach to media, setting up interviews and managing questions and answers (Q&A) documents with inputs from the MPP team.
  • Write and edit communications materials including, but not limited to, press releases, opinion pieces, statements, interviews, and web copy.
  • Under the supervision of the Head of Communications and in close collaboration with other departments, manage the preparation of key events such as international conferences, webinars etc: Engage in planning, setting the agenda, developing promotional materials, and facilitating the event post, during and afterwards to ensure broad visibility of MPP.
  • Under the supervision of the Head of Communications, manage the development of MPP’s impact stories following interviews or field visits.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of Communications to implement MPP’s communications strategy.

Knowledge/Qualifications

  • Strong background in engaging media on health-related (or similar) issues
  • Experience in managing events, in person and virtual.
  • Excellent writing skills in English and experience in writing for different audiences.
  • Strong background in project management with the ability to work under pressure on multiple technical projects, liaising with external providers and internal departments.
  • Superb attention to detail.
  • Experience of working across teams to deliver results.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, WordPress and Mailchimp required.
  • Computer savvy, with successful experience managing multiple social media platforms and genuine interest for new technologies and innovative communications tools.

Experience in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign a plus.

Professional background

  • Five to ten years of full-time work experience in a related field
  • Experience of communications in public health setting required.
  • Experience in journalism or working for public relations agency a plus.
  • Knowledge of issues related to access to medicines and intellectual property a plus.

Education and special training

  • University degree.

Use of Languages

  • Native-level English required.
  • Proficiency to fluency in French a plus.
