What Utopians Do

The open secret is that the music industry is struggling with the very basics of music accounting: What was played, when and where? Who should get paid and how much?

Utopia Music is bridging the data gap by connecting global consumption, accurate metadata, and fast payments to an industry-wide trust platform. Our goal is to unlock creative value and enable Fair Pay For Every Play to make a better world for Music. The solutions we offer do not threaten to usurp the role of industry incumbents - it is about bringing transparency in the industry and supporting efficient royalty collection for all.

THE ROLE

Utopia is a “data first” company. As such, we embrace the “data mesh” paradigm, with many data resources residing in different decentralized and heterogeneous storage systems across the company. Different groups in the company “own” different data.

The challenge in this role is to bring together the many different data resources by analysing what data there is, where, what’s the quality of it, what are the major data entities, how can they be matched, linked, merged or otherwise brought together with the aim of wider usage within the company and beyond.

We want to leverage the manifold different data sources (internal and external) to build products that are more than just the sum of their data. New ideas and business opportunities arise once the right data is brought together.

In this role we require your skillset as a data expert, exploring various ways of data matching (strict matching, fuzzy matching, semantic matching, text analysis, entity recognition etc.) to link large-scale datasets and identify entities that are “the same” in multiple data sources. We also ask you to think beyond, to proactively come up with non-traditional ideas of how to link data assets (e.g. through audio fingerprinting, where you could work together with our music analysis and audio

fingerprinting teams).

In this role you will empower all departments of Utopia with enriched data assets thanks to linking data assets that are currently siloed.

Responsibilities

• Investigate and get a good overview of data resources a Utopia
• Make a data linkage plan
• Prototype, validate and execute data matching and linking algorithms
• Explore different methodologies such as ID matching, strict matching, fuzzy matching, entity recognition etc.
• Embrace the data mesh paradigm
• Think beyond standard solutions and explore advanced non-obvious solutions
• Maintain and improve data quality; measure data quality before and after linking
• Discuss data matching and linking solutions with Product Managers and Data Leads
• Proactively suggest new solutions, as well as improvements for data linking and data quality
• Create realistic roadmaps and execute data matching solutions in timely manner
• Collaborate with other data scientists on product-oriented solutions
• Coordinate with infrastructure team on providing the appropriate resources to fulfill the mission
• Collaborate and thrive in a cross-functional team of engineers, data scientists, engineering leads and product leads
• Follow our agile processes and Scrum methodology, working in a product squad
  
  

Ideal Experience

• MSc or PhD in Computer Science, Data Science, Data Management, Data Engineering, Data Warehousing, Data QA, (Business) Analytics, Machine Learning, AI or related fields
• Experience with database systems
• Good understanding of data matching problems, data linking, fuzzy matching, ID matching, entity recognition etc.
• Good knowledge of relevant frameworks
• Good coding skills
• Goal-driven and product-oriented mindset
• Ability to work in a team as well as independently
• Proficiency in English
