UNEP accesses the analytical materials and recommendations that are necessary to support the government and investors in Türkiye in valuing of critical ecosystems, thus allowing UNEP to support Türkiye to incorporate such considerations into policies and practice concerning economic, environmental, climate-related and civil protection issues.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

In line with its Medium Term Strategy (2022-25), UNEP supports governments, regional organizations and UN entities in designing and implementing best-practice policies to address climate impacts, biodiversity loss and pollution. UNEP’s Ecosystems division identifies emerging environmental stressors, and works through UN partners to promote resilience, sustainable governance and management of natural resources and ecosystems in crisis-affected states and regions. The Regional Office for Europe provides strategic and political engagement at the country level, and works closely with the UN Country Teams (UNCT) and the UN Resident Coordinator’s offices (RCO).

To support UNEP’s engagement with Türkiye on environmental issues of concern, UNEP seeks a consultant to provide substantive technical expertise on valuing ecosystems services in Türkiye to advance biodiversity and climate resilience.

Specific Tasks And Responsibilities
  • Preparation of a summary of the economic and environmental value of critical ecosystems in Türkiye
  • Conduct secondary (literature) research on existing scientific material/evidence that demonstrates the value of ecosystems protection, with a focus on forest ecosystems in Türkiye.
  • Review and summarize the status of evidence-base on the value of ecosystems protection in Türkiye, with a focus on forest ecosystems in Türkiye.
  • Present findings to UNEP and its partners at the national and regional level.
  • Preparation of a summary of the economic and environmental value of critical ecosystems in Türkiye.
  • Review and analyse relevant existing research on the economic and environmental value of critical ecosystems, including modelling and political economy analysis.
  • Prepare a summary of the economic and environmental value of critical ecosystems in Türkiye, with a focus on the linkages between critical ecosystems.
  • Present findings to UNEP and its partners at the national and regional level.
  • Develop of recommendations to demonstrate how forest ecosystems contribute to different economic and environmental outcomes in priority regions in Türkiye
  • Identify options and steps for the further use of hydrological and SWAT models to demonstrate how forest ecosystems contribute to different economic and environmental outcomes in priority regions in Türkiye and the connected regional ecosystems
  • Provide guidance on using the key evidence to demonstrate how forest ecosystems contribute to different economic and environmental outcomes in priority regions in Türkiye and the connected regional ecosystems
  • Identify opportunities for strengthening for the further use of hydrological and SWAT models to demonstrate how forest ecosystems contribute to different economic and environmental outcomes.
Qualifications/special Skills

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental science, natural sciences, international development, international law (with emphasis on environment or disaster management) or international relations (with emphasis on environment or disaster management), or another demonstrably relevant field.

At least 10 years working experience on natural resources, environment or related field is required;

Experience in detailed environmental analysis, including the development and use of models relating to the environment and water resources, is desirable

Experience of advising local or national governments on the use of environmental analysis to inform policy decisions is desirable;

Experience in the Mediterranean region and Türkiye is desirable;

Experience working with international organisations is considered an asset.

Skills

Excellent research and analytical skills and specialized experience in ecosystems

Ability to develop hydrological and SWAT models

Advanced ability to analyse and describe the links between ecosystems, economic and environmental outcomes

Languages

Proficiency in English, knowledge of Turkish, Arabic or French is an asset.
