Job Summary

This job contributes to Starbucks success by actively designing and executing against the overall global coffee and cocoa sourcing strategies for Starbucks Coffee. Managing the coffee and cocoa trading and traffic teams, and execution of green coffee procurement, sourcing, contract management and sales to Starbucks through Starbucks Coffee Trading Company. The partner models and acts in accordance with Starbucks guiding principles.

Summary of Key Responsibilities:

The key responsibilities and essential job functions of the director of trading and traffic include but are not limited to the following:
  • Models leadership behaviors that are grounded in Starbucks Mission and Values
  • Drives the engagement, development, and performance of all members of their team
  • Identifies and communicates key responsibilities and practices to ensure the immediate team of direct reports promotes a successful attitude, confidence in leadership, and teamwork to achieve business results
  • Supports the implementation of company programs to ensure the success of the Company, while creating an environment that enables their team to perform at their best and promotes leadership courage to enable risk-taking, continuous improvement, problem solving, and innovative thinking
  • Develops strategic and operational plans for the work group, managing execution, and measuring results
  • Develops and executes price risk and volatility strategies, including coffee and cocoa futures, and/or using alternative pricing mechanisms, like accumulators, Options collars
  • Plans and manages business unit/department processes and practices to ensure that programs are aligned with company business goals and objectives
  • Prepares, communicates, and educates client groups and team on changes in policies and practices within the organization
  • Establishes and maintains vendor relationships
  • Manages the purchase of all green coffee of Starbucks standard. Maximizes price to quality ratio
  • Manages the sale of all green coffee to Starbucks against Starbucks Support Center forecasts
  • Manages the worldwide delivery of all green coffee to Starbucks in accordance with Starbucks Support Center forecasts and needs, including toll roasting, instant factories, decaffeination. Increase complexity on supply-chain and deployment of coffee on time and in full all around the world.
  • Challenges and inspires partners to achieve business results
  • Ensures partners adhere to legal and operational compliance requirements
  • Conducts and ensures the completion of performance reviews
  • Oversees training and development of partners directly and indirectly managed and makes effective staffing decisions
  • Provides coaching, direction, and leadership support to team members in order to achieve partner, business and customer results
  • Education (minimum education level, degree, or certification necessary): Secondary school degree, diploma in business administration, international trade, or similar qualification
  • Skills (minimum skills required):
  • Fluent in spoken and written English, Spanish or Portuguese is a plus
  • Proficient in MS Excel, Word, PPT and Outlook, good underling knowledge and understanding of other IT systems e.g. Oracle, SAP or others
  • clear and concise communication, good analytical skills, customer, and results oriented, good sensory skills
  • Good organizational and people leader skills
  • Ability to work effectively under time pressure and meet deadlines
  • Develops a positive, respectful, productive, and professional work environment
  • Establishes positive connections with others to facilitate the attainment of business results
  • Able to successfully function during times of uncertainty and changing priorities
  • Remains calm, maintains perspective and responds in a professional manner when faced with tough situations
  • Years of experience in specific field or utilizing designated skills (minimum needed to be qualified): 5-10 years of trading experience in coffee trading enterprises, either export or import or combination. Regular coffee cupping experience

The successful candidate should have the following:

  • Education (minimum education level, degree, or certification necessary): Secondary school degree, diploma in business administration, international trade, or similar qualification

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Education (ideal education level or degree): Baccalaureate, IB, Diploma in international trade or bachelor’s degree in economics, business administration, or similar field, Q-Grader or similar qualification is a plus
  • Skills (ideal):
  • Fluent in spoken and written English and Spanish, other languages including Portuguese are a plus
  • Proficient in MS Excel, Word, PPT and Outlook. Good underlying knowledge and understanding of other IT systems e.g. Oracle, SAP or other
  • Clear and concise communication, strong analytical skills, customer, and results focused

  • Years of experience (ideal): >10 years of trading experience in coffee trading enterprises including export and import operations and related trade services, frequent cupping experience, proven track of people management.
