About the Debiopharm Chair for Family Philanthropy


The Debiopharm Chair for Family Philanthropy was launched in 2017 with the goal to improve our understanding of family philanthropy, to help individuals & families engage in and strengthen their philanthropic activities and to ensure that philanthropy is an integral part of the family enterprise system. The Chair pursues its purpose through thought leadership, education and outreach. Since its inception in 2017, the Chair has developed a range of tools, frameworks and research on family philanthropy, including the award-winning Family Philanthropy Navigator, a series of book chapters, as well as case studies, reports and academic articles based on an international study of philanthropists from around the world.

In the next phase, we aim at broadening the scope of our activities and impact on enterprising families, by enhancing our portfolio of teaching activities, the launch of advisory services dedicated to family philanthropy, the dissemination of the Navigator across the globe, hosting events and philanthropy roundtables, the creation of tools and services to families, in addition to continued scientific work.



The Job’s mission


The Fellow will work as part of the Debiopharm Chair for Family Philanthropy, which is embedded into the Global Family Business Center. The Fellow will be working closely together with Peter Vogel, who is both the Chairholder as well as the Director of the Center, as well as the wider team of the Center. As such, the Fellow will be embedded into the core team and be involved in all the activities conducted by the wider Center, to ensure that the mission of the chair is being achieved in the most effective and efficient way.

Key activities & accountabilities


• Overall management and coordination of the chair’s activities in research, teaching and outreach.
• Support with the production of practitioner-oriented articles.
• Support with the production of tools, frameworks, and other useful material for families.
• Prepare and be involved with the advisory board of the chair.
• Manage relationships with our community of philanthropists and experts.
• Attend specialized philanthropist events.
• Support with the dissemination of the Family Philanthropy Navigator around the world.
• Work collaboratively with the center team, the wider IMD community and beyond to work towards the mission of our chair.
• Participation in our wider center activities and programs, including support of group work during programs as a facilitator.



Ideal profile


• Ideally a PhD degree in Philanthropic Studies, Management, Social Entrepreneurship or a related discipline.
• Keen and demonstrable interest in family philanthropy, family business and social entrepreneurship or other closely associated subjects.
• Entrepreneurial, hands-on attitude.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, feeling at ease communicating with enterprising families.
• Experience working in the field of family business is a plus.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Ability to work independently and proactively with minimum supervision.
• Deadline and results oriented.
• Ability to work well under pressure.
• Full fluency in English (written and spoken) at a native level or equivalent. Other languages – in particular French – are a plus.
• Experience writing for executive audiences.
