In particular, TSL analyses novel materials and emerging technology applications with a focus on associated material and energy stocks and flows, and evaluates them with regard to both natural environment and societal constraints.The Advancing Life Cycle Assessment Group (ALCA), within TSL, is looking for a Postdoc.Your tasksThe successful candidate will carry out research activities related to the environmental assessment of urban areas, using the life cycle assessment (LCA) method, scenarios of transformation, and digital twins. Inputs from various stakeholders with the goal of identifying actionable opportunities of change will support the work. The position is part of the SWEET project SWICE ( https://sweet-swice.ch ), a multidisciplinary collaboration between several Swiss research institutions and industrial partners, supported by the Swiss Federal Office for Energy. The work will be carried out at Empa under the supervision of Dr. Didier Beloin-Saint-Pierre, with a co-supervision by Prof. Corentin Fivet, EPFL.corentin.fivet@epfl.ch . Visits at the Structural Xploration Lab (EPFL Fribourg, https://sxl.epfl.ch ) are expected for a close collaboration.Key tasks and responsibilities:
  • Carry out preliminary LCAs of various Swiss neighbourhoods
  • Establish state-of-the-art reviews on sustainability-driven scenarios of change at the urban scale
  • Build a strategy to efficiently share the LCA results with all stakeholders of cities
  • Manage research activities in the context of a large national project
  • Co-advise PhD students in related fields
  • Collaborate with the partners and commissioners of these projects
  • Write scientific publications
Your profileRequired:
  • PhD in environmental/natural sciences or engineering or data science or urban assessments
  • Experience in scientific writing and publishing
  • Very good communication skills in English (written and spoken)
  • Experience with the life cycle assessment method and/or material flow analysis
Highly valued :
  • Experience in the following areas: urban systems and energy
  • Experience and demonstrated capacity to collaborate with a wide variety of partners
  • Experience in project with industrial or governmental partners
Useful :
  • Experience with ICT solutions and the digital community
  • Communication skills in French and German
  • Good management skills
