The Mixed Reality & AI Lab in Cambridge (UK) is a research team building the future for mixed reality. We bring innovative new technologies and experiences from early-stage research to deployment in Microsoft products. Our focus is to enable transformative new remote presence experiences that combine next-generation mixed reality hardware with AI software to improve our ability to communicate with each other remotely. The team has a diverse wealth of experience across computer vision, graphics, neural rendering, deep learning, interaction, human character animation and software engineering, and has a strong track record of shipping ground-breaking technologies in Microsoft products including Kinect and HoloLens.
The team is growing, and we are looking for talented researchers and software engineers with experience in computer vision, graphics, and machine learning: people who love to invent and build new stuff that really works and can be deployed to millions of users. To get a taste of our research, see talks at CVPR 20 and CVPR 21, and example upcoming work at ICCV ’21 on neural rendering and synthetic data generation.

In this role you will have particular focus on how to use human appearance and motion tracking AI to animate stylised characters (avatars). To excel at the role, you will need to be curious, love building software as part of a team, be comfortable dealing with the ambiguity of R&D work, and take delight in learning new tools and techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver modules enabling delightful AI-driven face animation, such as face retargeting, auto-rigging and tracking personalization
  • Collaborate across multiple scientific and engineering disciplines, making the architectural investments and trade-offs required to enable rapid iteration.
  • Design and implement core software systems for prototyping virtual presence experiences with mixed reality devices and services
  • Learn constantly, educate others, dive into new areas with unfamiliar technologies and evangelize best practices

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • PhD or solid industry experience in Computer Graphics, Computer Vision or Machine Learning
  • Strong software engineering experience in C++, C# or Python, with good debugging skills
  • 1+ years experience related to 3D computer graphics: in 3D geometry processing or/and real-time 3D development for Unity or Unreal

Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with Unity 3D or Unreal engine development
  • Familiarity with facial and character animation, blendshapes, and skinning
  • Experience related to 3D computer vision, ideally including experience of human motion modelling or parametric models of the human body/hands/face
  • Experience related to 3D computer graphics, ideally including experience of simulating the human body/hands/face
  • Experience working with machine learning methods
