Our group for Geocomputation and Earth Observation develops new model and data integration methods to improve our understanding of land surface processes and biogeochemical cycling in a changing climate. Starting in August 2022, we are part of the Institute of Geography at the University of Bern and work at the intersection of remote sensing, geodata science, Earth and ecosystem science and high-performance computing. We are recruiting a Scientific programmer/data scientist (50-100%).

You take a leading role in the development of our group’s data and computing environment to enable scientific discoveries and efficient workflows, making use of big environmental data.

This position serves to develop and publish code and design data and modelling workflows that form the backbone of diverse scientific projects in our group.

The candidate must hold a M.Sc. degree in natural sciences, computer science, or engineering and should demonstrate proficient English written and oral skills and excellent analytical, numerical and computational skills. Experience in scientific computing, development of numerical models (Earth system models or similar), and/or machine learning, ideally within the context of Earth system science, is required. Demonstrated skills in diverse programming languages and applications, including R, Fortran, and git are a prerequisite. We expect a collaborative mentality and enthusiasm for the development of our computational infrastructure and open-source software.
