Empa - the place where innovation startsEmpa is the research institute for materials science and technology of the ETH Domain and conducts cutting-edge research for the benefit of industry and the well-being of society. Our Laboratory of Cellulose & Wood Materials has a challenging scientist or postdoc position to develop biopolymer-based sustainable electronic materials.Scientist or Postdoc position on sustainable electronic materialsTogether with our team of experienced scientists and industry partners, you will develop a new generation of green and sustainable fillers and binder materials enabling a new generation of ecological printed circuit boards (eco PCBs). This project bridges our activities in the fields of biopolymers, printed electronics and composite processing and will be carried out in a framework of a large EU financed project with partners in e.g. Sweden, Austria and the Netherlands. Combining fundamental and applied science, the goal is to develop highly functional and commercially relevant material solutions. We envision that the generated knowledge will advance the use of sustainable materials for electronics in general and lead to developments that allow for the demonstration of the potential to integrate eco PCBs in real applications thereby contributing to a future green and circular electronics.Your Responsibilities
  • Evaluate novel biopolymer cellulose or wood-based composites.
  • Develop and optimize material processing methods (e.g. extrusion, thermoforming) for eco PCBs.
  • Characterize and validate developed formulations and materials in terms of physical properties, thermal, dielectric and electronic stability (based on functionality of printed circuits) and reliability.
  • Publish results in the form of patents or scientific journal articles, present results at project meetings and at international conferences.
Your profile
  • MSc or PhD degree in material science, process engineering or related fields.
  • Experience in experimental research, practical lab work (e.g. material development and processing,) and talent for experimental design is required.
  • Interest in sustainable materials development with a potential for industrial implementation.
  • Fluency in English and German (written and oral) is a pre-condition.
  • Self-motivated, critical-thinking, open-minded and communicative, with a strong interest to work in an international and interdisciplinary team as well as research environment.
The positionWe are an international team dedicated to advance the development of a new generation of active, sustainable and highly functional biomaterials using cellulose and wood as material resources. We offer an inspiring position (two years with possible extension) in a research institution in the Zürich area with outstanding infrastructure and within a broadly interdisciplinary setting. Empa supports equal opportunities such as the compatibility of work and other life areas and lives a culture of inclusion and respect. We are committed to increase the diversity of our team and encourage qualified people from all backgrounds and genders to apply for this position. For further information about the position please contact Dr Gustav Nyström gustav.nystroem@empa.ch or Dr Thomas Geiger thomas.geiger@empa.ch and visit our websites www.empa.ch/web/s302 and Empa-VideoWe look forward to receiving your online application including a letter of motivation, CV, diplomas with transcripts and contact details of two referees.
