DCM launched Fully Automated Speech to Text (FAST) project to set up a structure that will routinely run automatic speech recognition of the six UN languages to produce searchable transcripts of meeting proceedings. The Reviser/FAST Project Manager position is located in the Office of the Chief of the Languages Service, Division of Conference Management, United Nations Office at Geneva. The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Languages Service.

Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Reviser/FAST Project Manager will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Revises translations and/or original summary records dealing with a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations, in particular those of an exceptionally sensitive, complex or technical nature, while exceeding required workload standards and meeting deadlines, and provides feedback that helps revises become autonomous, self-revising translators/précis-writers.
  • Translates and self-revises texts covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations, particularly those of an exceptionally sensitive, complex or technical nature, while exceeding required workload standards and meeting deadlines.
Makes effective use of language technologies and assists the Section in promoting their utilization.
  • Directs the identification of new terminology material and plays a leading role in the setting of terminology standards.
  • Counsels, coordinates, supervises the work of translators/précis-writers of the Service/Section/Unit and assists them in the performance of their responsibilities.
  • Programmes daily and long-term work of the Service/Section/Unit, if required. translators/précis-writers.
  • Performs quality control of externally produced translations and/or establishes quality control criteria and procedures.
  • Acts as UNOG gText and gDoc focal point.
  • Acts as project manager for the FAST project on a part-time basis, when required.
  • Coordinates the FAST project; monitors and analyses project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and initiates corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; ensures follow-up actions.
  • Assists the Chief of the Languages Service in devising change management strategy to support modernization of the documentation services.
  • Plans and facilitates workshops and other interactive sessions and assists in developing the action plan the Languages Service will use to manage the change.
  • Researches, analyses and presents information gathered from diverse sources.
  • Generates project evaluation initiatives; designs data collection tools; reviews, analyses and interprets data collected to identify issues and resolutions.
  • Organizes and prepares written outputs including planning documents, project charters, process analysis and project reports.
  • Provides substantive backstopping to consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc., to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations, etc.
  • Conducts training workshops related to the project; makes presentations on assigned topics/activities.
  • Coordinates activities related to project budget funding and prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget, etc.)
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Education

A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status.

Job - Specific Qualification

Candidates for this position must have passed the combined United Nations Language Competitive Examination for Translators/Précis-writers, Editors, Verbatim Reporters and Copy Preparers/Proofreaders/Production Editors or any relevant United Nations language competitive examination held before 2017.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of experience in translation, précis-writing, editing, self-revision, verbatim reporting, copy preparing, proofreading or production editing is required.

Experience in the use of standard computer-assisted-translation (CAT) tools is desirable.

Three years of experience working within a multilingual setting is desirable.

Experience working within the United Nations or a similar international organization is desirable.

Proven experience in self-revision is desirable.

Experience in working with linguistics software applications, multimedia formats and back office applications is desirable.

Experience with PRINCE2 or similar project management methodology is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, excellent knowledge of English (as assessed in the relevant Competitive Examination) is required; knowledge of two other official languages (also as assessed in the relevant Competitive Examination), one of which must be French, is also required.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
