About the Team


Our vision is to power the Casualty business with forward looking analytics and to innovate how we underwrite. As Swiss Re’s Casualty Research and Development department we are passionate about researching trends relevant for the Casualty portfolio and translating our work into impactful strategic business insights. Our work ranges from crafting the strategic outlook of the Casualty lines with midterm trend assessments, to developing short term forecasting models for costing parameters. Our Data Science team applies machine learning techniques to unlock the potential of internal and external datasets, while the Modelling team develops costing methodologies, like our patented Liability Risk Drivers™ forward-looking model and the modelling tools needed to advance underwriting excellence in Casualty.


We are a multi-national team of around 25 operating out of Zurich, New York and Bangalore and a wide variety of cultural and professional backgrounds. We are part of the Swiss Re Institute working closely with our underwriting units and all business functions globally. The Casualty R&D EMEA team consists of 4 Casualty Specialists, well integrated in the broader Casualty community.


About The Role

As Senior Casualty Specialist you build on your broad Casualty knowledge and business acumen to develop and deliver actionable analytical insights for the EMEA reinsurance as well as the worldwide facultative and direct business.


Your main responsibilities are:

  • Develop a trusted relationship with the assigned portfolio owners for which you will act as the Casualty R&D point of contact

  • Collaborate with our external and internal partners to identify and address their business needs.

  • Manage and contribute to topics and projects delivering research insights to the portfolio owners and senior management

  • Track casualty-relevant analytics and emerging trends that influence underwriting and stay ahead of the market changes

  • Identify risks and opportunities and develop forward-looking views for strategic portfolio steering and capital allocation

  • Shape an impactful R&D agenda for the assigned portfolios and topics and deliver superior business insights

  • Contribute to a diverse team, mentor and coach team members and peers with focus on developing Casualty underwriting or claims knowledge

  • Raise the profile of the Swiss Re Institute as a research leader in Casualty internally and externally


About You


You bring the following qualifications:

  • 7 or more years of work experience in Commercial Insurance and ideally Facultative Reinsurance – with a strong underwriting, claims portfolio management or pricing expertise in Casualty EMEA and ideally also the US

  • Experience and Expertise in Financial Lines is a strong asset

  • Strong academic background in mathematics, statistics/data analysis or computer science, or another quantitative field like natural sciences, economics or quantitative finance

  • Hands-on experience in R or similar programming language and ability to carry out own analyses is preferred

  • Demonstrable track record in delivering research and analytics insights to the business

  • Good understanding of legal questions in the context of Casualty would be a strong plus

  • Fluent in English and at least one additional European language (written and oral), preferably German, French or Italian
