The position holder is required to have considerable expertise in loss prevention and loss control matured within the process industry sector with specific reference to the refining, petrochemical and chemical industries.

About the Role

You will closely interact with internal clients as part of the production/underwriting/servicing team. The main task is advising our underwriters on risk quality and loss estimates in order to achieve a preferable risk selection. This is done by reviewing, interpreting and summarizing technical risk information (desk-top risk analysis or client visits).

This role consists mainly of internal consultation, but also encompasses on-site risk inspections and operations reviews to verify our clients’ risk mitigation approaches and providing clients with risk improvement suggestions.

Further, to support Swiss Re’s expansion in the direct insurance business, the successful candidate will serve as the account engineer for clients written out of the CORSO offices who look to Swiss Re for risk engineering servicing.

The position holder is expected to have special knowledge of the refining, petrochemical and chemical industries and the standards/practices required for preventing losses, including state-of-the art design for layout and construction, fire protection (deluge water spray, foam systems, alarm systems, etc.), process safety management (PSM), process hazard analysis (PHA), management of change (MoC), incident investigations, and all of the aspects regarding asset integrity including inspection/maintenance programs for guaranteeing fitness for service of static and rotating equipment. Although focus is required for the oil "downstream" segment, knowledge and experience in some aspects of petroleum industry "upstream" operations would be considered a plus. Knowledge and experience in one or several other industries besides refineries/petrochemical/chemical, e.g., pharmaceuticals, utilities, plastics, etc. would be considered a plus.

The position holder must be able to develop loss scenarios in line with insurance industry practices, including identifying, analyzing and estimating property damage and business continuity impacts from vapor cloud explosions. Knowledge of model tools for estimating overpressure damage would be considered a plus but is not a requirement. Account engineering expectations entail developing service plans, negotiating fees, directing field risk engineers and interacting with the client and broker to serve the needs of the client.

As a member of our global Risk Engineering Services (RES) team, the position holder will be one of our experts for refining, petrochemical and chemical risks. He or she will be expected to contribute to various projects and papers involving best practices, guidelines, underwriting costing and industry updates as well as conducting seminars and technical training sessions.

About you

  • Minimum of 8-10 years of experience, with special expertise in the petrochemical and chemical Industries
  • Language skills: English (other could be advantageous)
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Property insurance background or a combination of property insurance and industrial experience
  • Degree in chemical or petroleum engineering, but equivalent experience along with a degree in chemistry or another engineering field will be considered
  • Proficient computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office products)
  • Business sense, team player, service mindset
