Job content

Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, Empa’s around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.

In line with Empa’s mission, the Technology and Society Laboratory (TSL) creates and transfers knowledge to support the transition to a more sustainability society. In particular, TSL analyses novel materials and emerging technology applications with a focus on associated material and energy stocks and flows, and evaluates them with regard to both natural environment and societal constraints.

Within TSL, the Environmental Risk Assessment and Management Group (ERAM), is looking for two postdocs/scientists responsible for experimental work about release of materials from biocidal nanocoatings and from textiles made from biobased fibers. The released fibers will also be tested for their toxicological effects.

Your tasks

The ERAM-group has much experience in assessing the release of materials from products, in particular from synthetic textiles throughout the whole life-cycle. In the context of the European NOVA project, one postdoc/scientist will investigate the release of materials from biocidal nanocoatings. The second postdoc/scientist will work on an internally-funded project to study the release of materials from bio-based fibers during use and under environmental conditions. In a collaboration with toxicologists at Empa, the toxicity of the released fibers to human lung cells will also be investigated.

Your profile

  • Master Degree or PhD in environmental/natural sciences or engineering
  • Experience with (nano)material characterization or release experiments
  • Preferably some experience with in-vitro toxicity tests
  • Experience in scientific writing and publishing
  • Excellent communication skills and fluency in English (both written and oral)
Our offer

We offer a stimulating academic environment in a laboratory with about 40 scientists dedicated to creating and transfering knowledge supporting the transition to a more sustainable society. We offer one 24 month postdoc position (NOVA) and one 36 month postdoc position (Fiber release). Both positions are available immediately but the starting date can be negotiated.

We live a culture of inclusion and respect. We welcome all people who are interested in innovative, sustainable and meaningful activities - that’s what counts.

We look forward to receiving your complete online application including a letter of motivation, CV, certificates, diplomas and contact details of two reference persons. Please submit these exclusively via our job portal. Applications by e-mail and by post will not be considered.
