In short

  • At Cradle, we are on a mission to help make programming biology easy. We do that by providing biologists with the software, machine learning & services to discover, design and optimise enzymes and their cell-factories
  • We’re an experienced team, have built many successful products before and we’ve raised EUR 5.5m from top tier investors
  • We’re focused on building the best possible team culture. We’re distributed across two locations, do almost everything async and are super flexible about when we work.
  • We offer top of the market salary, a generous equity stake in the company and a wide range of benefits from health and wellbeing, financial, to training and career progression opportunities.

This is Cradle

Cradle aims to make programming biology easy by providing biologists the tools to discover, design and optimise enzymes and cell-factories. We are bridge builders who bring together the best of machine learning, synthetic biology, developer tools, and user experience design. Our mission is to enable a world where most of the products around us can be easily made and degraded biologically using a cell-factory instead of (petro-)chemicals, plants or animal agriculture.

In software we have an almost infinite degree of freedom on designing solutions. We at Cradle want to use this flexibility to provide a new level of experience for biological engineers. These engineers work on optimising proteins (sequences of amino acids), which currently includes a lot of expert knowledge and manual steps. We want to revolutionise their processes and build a ‘photoshop for proteins’ supported by machine learning. On that mission we deal with complex user objectives, diverse data structures and physical lab interactions while offering an easy to use, low code user interface.

What we’re looking for

We believe that UX Research is of fundamental importance to deeply understand the people we want to help with our tools, the context they work in and the problems they are trying to solve. We are therefor looking for our first UX Researcher who is eager to do both foundational research, as well as more tactical research to (help) form and evaluate our prototypes and product.

You will apply a wide range of research methods, both qualitative as well as quantitative, to get an in-depth understanding of the people who (could potentially) use our products, and you will drive efforts within the company to build empathy for the challenges they face. You will also actively help with coming up with potential solutions and lead efforts in evaluating them to help prioritise our roadmap and help set a long-term vision for the company.

The right candidates will be excellent communicators, knowledgeable about UI design, passionate about building complex tools and comfortable in a flat, small, fast-moving organisation where each individual has a lot of responsibility.

Must-Haves

  • You are able to show that you have done multiple foundational studies using a range of research methods.
  • An understanding of research methods strengths and weaknesses and experience planning and conducting mid-to-large scale research projects across various product phases.
  • Ability to concisely and persuasively communicate research findings.
  • MS/PhD in human-computer interaction, anthropology, sociology, communication, market research, information science, or a related field

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with doing a contextual inquiry study.
  • Experience in the field of (molecular) biology.
  • Experience with researching developer tools.
  • Experience with designing and prototyping a product.
  • Experience with mixed methods - both qualitative and quantitative - with a focus on more strategic research.
