JIPS is an interagency service set up in 2009 and dedicated to bringing governments, displaced persons, host communities and national and international actors together to collaborate to collect, analyse and use data to inform Durable Solutions for Internal Displacement. Co-hosted by the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), JIPS’ Executive Committee further includes the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the UN Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC), the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), and the Office of the Special Rapporteur on the human rights of IDPs.

A globally recognized neutral broker, JIPS supports collaborative and responsible approaches to data collection and use in Internal Displacement contexts, with a particular focus on developing national capacities, durable solutions, urban displacement, and IDP statistics.

OVERALL PURPOSE

As part of the Knowledge Sharing & Communications unit, under the supervision of the Head of Unit and the overall guidance of JIPS’ Coordinator, the Digital Platforms Officer will be responsible for implementing and elevating JIPS’ digital strategy and presence across its different platforms. This will involve managing JIPS’ platforms redesign project, and translating analytical outputs from JIPS’ research or data processes supported by JIPS into compelling, data-driven, and innovative digital publications and data stories. It further includes keeping JIPS’ digital presence up-to-date and user-centred, monitoring and analysing web traffic and metrics, as well as staying abreast of the ever-changing digital landscape, opportunities, and trends to spot and explore innovative solutions that may serve JIPS’ strategic goals and impact.

The ideal candidate is an experienced digital platforms professional with demonstrated experience in implementing creative digital platforms projects. They have the necessary technical and analytical skills as well as knowledge of digital trends to strategically combine visual, interactive, and narrative/storytelling techniques into digital solutions that convey insights in ways that galvanize the integration of displacement analysis in decision making processes.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

  • Contribute to implementing and elevating JIPS’ digital strategy and presence across its digital platforms, including jips.org, its toolkit, digital publications, data stories, the Interagency Durable Solutions Indicator Library, and others
  • Coordinate the redesign project of JIPS’ digital platforms based on insights from their evaluation, including liaising with external web contractors, efficient work planning and flows, content planning, coordinating contributions from JIPS team members as relevant, documenting the process, and overall contributing to a strategic, coherent, and integrated approach
  • Maintain JIPS’ digital platforms up to date, including on technical aspects (meta information, taxonomy, etc.), while ensuring good UX and alignment with JIPS’ branding
  • Support any new digital projects (interactive data stories, data visualization, and digital publications) from their concept development to their implementation, hosting, and maintenance, using existing tools/software and working with service providers where needed
  • Monitor and analyse platforms analytics, consolidate and mainstream good practices and lessons learned in the JIPS team and to continuously improve and amplify outcomes;
  • Keep track of digital trends, tools/software, and good practices to leverage JIPS’ digital strategy, outputs, and overall presence, and explore innovative/creative approaches where useful
  • Assist with other activities in the Knowledge Sharing & Communications Unit as required and actively participate as a team player, showing initiative and proactivity in support to others

QUALIFICATION, EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCIES

  • Advanced university degree in digital communications or other related disciplines
  • At least 3-4 years of professional experience working in digital communications, digital platforms management, interactive data stories and data visualization, or related
  • Basic skills in modern programming languages (e.g. HTML, CSS), website publishing technologies, data visualization tools (e.g. Power BI, Tableau, Mapbox, RawGraphs, Flourish), and data story platforms (e.g. ArcGIS/ESRI)
  • Experience in modern web architecture, content management systems (CMS)
  • Familiarity with web content, development and design best practices: user experience design, usability, accessibility, and search engine optimisation (SEO)
  • Experience combined with a genuine interest in working on forced displacement and data/analysis in the non-profit or international aid sector
  • Sound experience in web project management, highly organized,
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills (English), with demonstrated analytical skills and the ability to convey complex/technical concepts to diverse audiences
  • Ability to work independently and flexibly in a global environment, effective and resourceful team player, proactive and self-motivated, creative thinker with a problem-solving attitude
  • Native English speaker; fluency in oral and written Spanish, French, Arabic a plus
  • Graphic design and visual communication skills, as well as familiarity with related editing software (e.g. Adobe CC) a plus

SALARY AND CONDITIONS

The position is placed in Geneva, Switzerland with the Geneva Representation office. This position will be placed at Employment Band – H. DRC offers a competitive salary based on qualification and experience, approximate monthly gross salary is estimated to be around 6’200 CHF. DRC does not pay any additional allowances (schooling, housing etc.). DRC staff pay tax and social security according to Swiss law and health insurance.
