Senior R&D Engineer - Photonics (Packaging & Assembly)

At Lumiphase, we are looking for a senior semiconductor packaging R&D engineer to join our team for developing packaging concepts and processes for our optical chips. It is part of the job to make those processes ready for integration into our customers’ newest generations of data communication modules.

In this role, you will be at the heart of our technology by ensuring that our groundbreaking semiconductor chips can realize their full performance potential with appropriate electrical, optical, and mechanical integration solutions. You will interact closely with the rest of the packaging team as well as cross-functionally with the reliability, design, testing, fab, and product teams.

Tasks

• Develop new packaging and assembly technologies for Lumiphase’s photonics integrated circuit devices;
• Mechanical design of packaging concepts, tools, and fixtures for production;
• Packaging and assembly process development and optimization (die bonding, wire bonding, fiber attachment, encapsulation, etc.);
• Build up packaging capabilities both internally and in collaboration with external suppliers;
• Build up backend volume production capabilities (dicing, die sorting, testing, inspection, etc.).
  
  

Requirements

• Several years of experience in semiconductor packaging and assembly processes (pick and place, alignment, testing, wire bonding, die bonding, ideally also micro-optics or fiber-optics assembly, etc.) including hands-on lab and equipment experience;
• Experience using electronic and ideally also optical test equipment;
• Experience with CAD software (for example Solidworks, Autodesk);
• Python programming skills for coding measurement scripts and for data evaluation;
• Experience in planning and project management is beneficial;
• Experience in packaging and/or semiconductor device reliability is beneficial;
• Experience in the design of printed circuit boards or other substrate technologies is beneficial;
• Creative mindset motivated to develop new solutions, hands-on attitude with the drive to tackle complex technical challenges;
• Strong team working and good verbal and written communication skills.

Our recruitment process consists of three stages:

• A 30 min. phone interview with our People & Culture team member to discuss your general career motivations, and present our company and this role.
• A 1-1.5 hour phone interview with 1-2 members of the hiring team to deep dive into the core skills requirements.
• An on-site visit to interview with and meet many members of the team that you would be working in. This often includes lunch and gives you a strong sense of the company culture and individuals.
