Position Summary

Apellis seeks a Communications expert to lead international communications for the company. This is an exciting role to lead the communications strategy for the company’s first potential ex-US product launches and the first and only potential treatment for a leading cause of blindness, known as geographic atrophy or advanced dry AMD. This individual will be responsible for leading ex-US product communications and building Apellis’ corporate reputation in Europe, ensuring alignment with the corporate brand. Based in Zug, Switzerland, this role will report to the VP of Communications in Waltham, Mass., and be the primary Communications contact for the SVP & GM International, regional European Marketing, and General Managers of our international affiliates.

The Communications Lead, International, will be a critical thinker with exceptional writing and planning skills, and proven experience leading communications in Europe and other countries outside the US.

Key Responsibilities Include
  • Develop and drive the execution of communication plans to support the potential ex-US launches of the first and only treatment for geographic atrophy. Ensure alignment with all global product messaging and corporate guidelines.
  • Lead the strategy for European media outreach around the CHMP opinion and potential EU approval, coordinating closely with the company’s ex-US PR agency.
  • Develop strategy, templates, and messaging that can be easily used by local affiliates within and outside of Europe to support country-specific launches and other major local milestones.
  • Serve as company spokesperson with ex-US media. Establish and maintain networks and relationships with journalists from mainstream and trade media across Europe
  • Media train approved ex-US Apellis spokespeople.
  • Develop a communications strategy to help build Apellis’ reputation in Europe and support recruitment efforts.
  • With a deep knowledge of the corporate story, ensure consistency of brand and message externally and internally.
  • Establish the communications function internationally and develop a resourceful growth plan for ex-US communications support.
  • Be a trusted and collaborative partner and advisor to international colleagues across the company.
  • Working closely with the senior manager, digital communications, lead the process for building ex-US corporate web sites and ensure an aligned strategy across all international sites.
  • Develop content to highlight the international team’s work on our corporate social media accounts, intranet, and at company-wide Town Halls.
  • Track, measure, and analyze the impact of communications programs.
Education, Registration & Certification
  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 10+ years Communications experience including leading pan-European / international communications for a biopharma company
Experience
  • Track record of supporting new product launches in Europe and experience in ophthalmology
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex science clearly and concisely
  • Expert knowledge of the European media landscape and communications environment
  • Proven ability to work effectively and influence across levels, functions, and regions
  • Experience being a trusted adviser to senior business leaders within a highly matrixed, global organization
  • Strategic, critical thinker with strong planning, organizational, and project management skills
  • Deadline-driven and accustomed to juggling multiple priorities with a sense of urgency
  • Self-aware and receptive to constructive feedback to improve performance
  • Strong learning agility, comfortable with ambiguity, and resilient in the context of a rapidly changing, highly innovative environment
  • Fluency in English essential, and in one other European language highly desirable
Travel Requirements

Ability to travel up to 20% of the time, primarily within Europe and to Apellis’ headquarters in Waltham, Mass.
