The Position

At Roche, we believe it’s urgent to deliver medical solutions right now – even as we develop innovations for the future. We are passionate about transforming patients’ lives, and we are fearless in both making decisions and taking action. And we believe that good business means a better world. That is why we come to work each day. We commit ourselves to scientific rigor, unassailable ethics, and access to medical innovations for all. We do this today to build a better tomorrow.

Sustainability is not just a ‘nice to have’. It is in the DNA of our company. For 125 years Roche has been committed to improving lives. The long-term thinking of our founders shapes the way in which we make a difference in the lives of millions of people around the world.

When it comes to plastics, the gut feeling is sometimes misleading. Hence a thoughtful approach is required to address our sustainability ambitions. Building on previous studies to reduce and recycle plastic waste at our R&D and manufacturing sites, we would like to elaborate the use case of the DIA consumables - the plastics needed to run our Diagnostic tests globally.

Along the stream of product stewardship, the following levers shall be assessed in collaboration with the respective colleagues: Design for sustainability with consumable development, procurement, etc., sustainable manufacturing of those consumables, the supply chain to our customers, including assessment of supporting them in local or regional (chemical) recycling options.

The position is funded for 3 months, however it can be combined with another 6-month position with similar requirements for skill sets. Please indicate your availability.

In this position, you will
  • build on pre-work on plastic sustainability
  • conduct stakeholder interviews in the entire diagnostics value chain from consumables development, consumables manufacturing, business partners, direct and indirect procurement, environmental sustainability, waste management and others
  • assess the use case for diagnostics instrument waste such as consumables, including past and ongoing work and identifying the biggest levers
  • fostering cross-organisational squads, potentially incl external patterns, to make a difference in those identified areas
  • share the story, potentially providing a platform also for others - at the final program summit
  • get in touch with around 12 other selected interns who work on other sustainability topics, providing an entry point to a unique network

Who You Are
You are an ambitious student who is enthusiastic about understanding holistic systems. You are currently enrolled in a Master program (or similar) in the field of environmental sustainability, material science, industrial engineering, or a related discipline.

Moreover, you are
  • Experienced in bringing together multiple perspectives and bringing together to make an impact
  • skilled in understanding plastics circularity and its associated technologies like pyrolysis, plasma gasification, solvolysis etc
  • Proficient in Life Cycle Assessment methodologies, Product Stewardship principles or similar
  • Constantly striving for high-quality work as well as effective oral and written communication;
  • Bringing some understanding on a regulated industry, e.g. in-vitro-diagnostics
  • Motivated to work in a multidisciplinary team
  • willing to work mostly remotely, but also travel on occasional basis

To be considered, please send us your complete application merged into one PDF including
  • A Motivation Letter
  • CV
  • A certificate of enrollment (if you are currently studying)
  • For non-EU/EFTA citizens: Certificate from the university stating that an internship is mandatory (required due to regulations)

We’d like to let you know that for this recruitment process we are going to invite you to an Online Assessment in case a first review of your application was successful.
