Presentation

The Department of Fundamental Microbiology offers a postdoctoral position in the chemical analysis of complex media that have been degraded by microbes.

Job information

Expected start date: 01.02.2023
Contract length: 1 year
Activity rate: 100%
Workplace: University of Lausanne

Your responsibilities

The Mitri lab has an open postdoctoral position to develop a pipeline to quantify the degradation products in different complex media, following their degradation by a microbial community. Our lab specializes in designing microbial communities with pre-specified functions. So far, we have focused on broadly defined functions, involving simple chemical tests that are blind to the chemical processes undertaken by the microbes. We would now like to advance beyond this to get a more detailed and quantitative understanding of the substrates being degraded. Two systems are of interest here: first, a bacterial community that can degrade machine oils called “Metal-Working Fluids”, which will be a project carried out in collaboration with Blaser Swisslube, a company in canton Bern that produces these oils; and second, a microbial community capable of degrading a bioplastic polymer developed by the group of Christian Ludwig at EPFL and the Paul Scherer Institute (PSI) in Villigen, Aargau. You will be expected to work on both of these projects, which may involve some time spent in Villigen at the PSI and in Rüegsau, Bern at Blaser Swisslube. In sum, we are looking for a highly motivated person to work on an exciting and highly collaborative project that will help reveal the chemical processes that are driven by microbes. If this sounds exciting to you, please do not hesitate to apply !

Your qualifications

  • PhD thesis (or planned defense at time of application)
  • Good publication record (at least one first-author publication in a reputable, international peer-reviewed journal)
  • Curious and open mind with high motivation to excel in science
  • Strong background in chemistry, in particular in chromatography and mass spectrometry
  • Some experience in basic microbiology, such as growing microbial cultures would be a plus
  • Interdisciplinary candidates are encouraged to apply

What the position offers you
