In this role, you will help defining development opportunities in the ABB power device and switchgear portfolio through to-the-application designed experimental setups as well as electrical and thermal testing laboratories. Together with scientists, you specify requirements and develop novel protection concepts for evolving applications, such as microgrids, integration of energy storage, or new topologies for a sustainable energy generation and distribution.

You connect the research requirements with the needed laboratory resources by providing modern solutions for electrical and thermal testing infrastructure.

Reporting to the Team Manager – Power Device Physics, you will engage with cross-functional teams inside and outside the company and work together to demonstrate these concepts in prototypes serving as starting points for products. Further, you will contribute to the definition of future testing infrastructure needs and projects.

Your responsibilities
  • Running and maintaining state-of-the-art electrical and thermal test labs
  • Defining, designing, and implementing new testing concepts
  • Supporting applied research in power devices and switchgear
  • Contribute to the planning, setup, and execution of experiments
  • Programming and operating laboratory safety and data acquisition hard-and software
  • Developing new technologies for sustainable protection solutions in upcoming applications of medium voltage switchgear, e.g., for grid integration of renewable energies, incl. energy storage and for microgrids
  • Closely cooperate with scientists and engineers from ABBs research centers, global ABB divisions, and universities
Your background
  • Bachelor or master’s in electrical engineering
  • Experience in practical laboratory work, including experimental setup, advanced measurement techniques and data analysis
  • Knowledge of and experience in lab-integrated programming (LabView, Python) is highly advantageous
  • A background in high-power testing is beneficial but not a must
  • Knowledge of designing and fabricating electronic circuit boards is an advantage
  • A collaborative, solution-focused approach, with strong written and spoken communication skills, as well as relationship-building skills
  • Strong communication skills in English (both written and spoken), German is a plus
