Job Description

50+! The number of New Biological Entities currently in early development awaiting to be transformed into successful high quality innovative medicines and in need of Experts in charge of the cell culture process development, starting from initial clone selection until the transfer to commercial production.

As a member of the USP technical team for Drug Substance Development (DSD), you will support the development and improvement of cell culture processes as well as the exploration of new technologies for therapeutic protein production.

In this scope, you will e.g.:
  • Support the development of efficient, high-yielding, robust and scalable fermentation processes for new biological entities, the process transfer to large scale, process characterization and validation
  • Design, plan, perform, and evaluate parallelized cell culture experiments at lab scale (small to bench-top)
  • Support the exploration, implementation, and improvement of established fed-batch and (semi) continuous perfusion cell culture processes, including technological applications, from vial break to harvest
  • Write protocols, basic scientific reports, lab procedures or SOPs; contribute to scientific documents intended for internal and external partners, or for generation of registration documents
  • Work in multidisciplinary, international teams, and actively contribute to project teams as USP expert. Interface with related drug substance process development and analytical functions.
Major accountabilities
  • Design, plan and implement USP lab activities, primarily parallel fermentation experiments, in our lab scale (<10 L) facility using innovative disposable and glass bioreactor technology.
  • Record experimental data in the respective data management systems. Review and verify raw data generated by others.
  • Generate and review technical or scientific documents, such as study plans and reports, development reports, risk assessments as part of our development projects.
  • Actively communicate and present your results in project teams.
  • Look after USP laboratory equipment.
  • Work according to appropriate standards defined for quality, ethics, health, safety, environment, and information security.

Requirements

Minimum requirements

Minimum:
  • Bachelor of Science in Life Sciences (e.g. Biotechnology, Biochemistry or Bioengineering) with knowledge and basic laboratory experience in upstream processing (i.e. aseptic handling of mammalian cells) or equivalent education/experience in an industrial setting
  • Intrinsic curiosity, willingness to adopt challenging tasks and grow in related areas of expertise (e.g. parallelized, automated fermentation)
  • Proficiency in English (both spoken & written)
Desirable:
  • Master of Science in Life Sciences (e.g. Biotechnology, Biochemistry or Bioengineering) with a profound background in upstream processing
  • Broad experience with upstream processing with mammalian cell cultures in bioreactors and statistical methods (DoE, MVDA)
  • Proficiency in German is an advantage
