Summary
Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC) is a global player in the commodities and food sector. Its businesses include worldwide origination, transport, processing and merchandising of agricultural commodities and freight. LDC is looking for a Senior Legal Counsel who will be responsible within the EMEA Region for supporting the global markets and financing needs of all EMEA entities and to provide support globally to the legal teams on a wide variety of financing, treasury and trade financing matters. The successful candidate will have a high degree of autonomy and be part of the EMEA Legal Team. S/he will also work and provide senior advice on trade finance and financing matters to legal teams globally, platforms and functions as a key senior member of LDC’s Global Markets & Finance Team. This lawyer will have excellent communication skills and judgment, together with a commercial and business orientated mindset to provide sound advice to platform leaders, treasury and finance teams. This lawyer will also be pro-active and driven and have the ability to manage and prioritize numerous competing matters and projects at the same time, but also remain flexible in responding to business needs. To be successful in this position, this lawyer will need to be committed towards providing excellent, value added advice and be entrepreneurial and internationally oriented. This lawyer thrives in a collegiate team setting within a complex, fast changing and challenging environment. LDC’s lawyers typically manage their assignments themselves and this lawyer will be expected to liaise with the appropriate business personnel themselves and handle their own drafting, rather than rely on external law firms to do the heavy lifting. Where LDC does work with an external law firm however, this lawyer will need to supervise that law firm effectively.
Main Responsibilities

The role will report directly to the CLO for EMEA and the Senior Lead Counsel - Global Markets and Financings and work closely with both Global and Regional legal teams across LDC. Main responsibilities will be:

  • Trade finance with a focus on trade finance documents and instruments, bank guarantees, opening, discounting and negotiation of SBLC’s, repo-financing agreements, supply chain and structured financing including structured transactions
  • Pre-export financings, prepayments, advanced payment facilities, documentary credits, limited recourse discounting agreements, CMAs, credit insurance.
  • General corporate banking finance work including syndicated and bilateral credit facilities, global financing, corporate lending (secured or unsecured), syndicated financing, structured financing.
  • Compliance/Regulatory: Working and liaising with compliance team to ensure full compliance with relevant laws, rules and regulations.
  • Sustainability/ financing: following-up and reporting internally to the Global Head of Sustainability and regional legal teams on main sustainability developments in the area of financial reporting obligations and/or generally group auditing.
  • Experience/ knowledge of ISDA/ derivatives and/or carbon trading and financing would be a plus.
  • Manage the use of external law firms and control related costs.
  • Ad hoc project or other regional work based on work capacity to assist regional CLO.
  • S/he will be responsible for developing templates, guidelines/ memos to help share the knowledge and best practices with the Legal teams but also the Treasury and Trade Finance teams; s/he will also be invited from time to time to give or organize trainings to the same teams.
  • The lawyer will be responsible for organizing and maintaining reference materials and a database of the Group’s financings/ transactions.
Experiences

  • Minimum 8 years PQE gained within international law firms or in-house teams of commodities trading houses or investment banks.
  • Solid knowledge of trade finance and structured trade finance issues.
  • Strong negotiator able to create consensus amongst different stakeholders
  • Strong experience in handling a high volume of multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to analyze complex legal issues.
  • Demonstrated professional with a culturally sensitive work ethic.
Skills

  • Strong individual with good communication skills is essential;
  • Excellent organizational skills – we typically handle dozens of unrelated tasks in one day;
  • Team player and collaborative/collegiate approach;
  • Strong attention to detail and high levels of accuracy at all times;
  • Ability to work under pressure and to regularly follow up on all outstanding issues;
  • Ability to work within a small team locally and across geographies in a large global company; and
  • Excellent knowledge of PC operating systems, particularly Microsoft Word, Excel, SharePoint;
  • English or common-law qualified preferred.
