Company Description

Spiden is a Swiss MedTech venture, based in Pfäffikon (SZ), with the vision to use state-of-the-art detection techniques to continuously monitor and learn from a wide range of vital medical indicators, allowing to improve your individual health.

We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled (Senior) Microfluidics Engineer with a strong medical background, affinity for technology and the will to start a career on the edge of medicine and technology. As we are a start-up, drive and passion for what we work towards, has to be a given. Are you ready to have a real impact and ultimately save lives? Depending on the level of experience this can be considered also a senior position.

Requirements:

  • Please note that solid Microfluidics industry work experience (within Medtech) is a must for this position.
  • M.Sc. or B.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering with over 3 years of microfluidic, mechanical and design work experience.
  • Successfully completed at least 2 full fluidic device development cycles with 70% of direct involvement.
  • Direct involvement in the design & development of microfluidic components and systems, exposure in the latest technological development specifically in microfluidic sample handling such as blood separation, particle sorting and transportation within lab-on-a-chip.
  • Experience in designing, modeling and characterizing channels with various geometries catered for both Newtonian and Non-Newtonian fluids flowing through microfluidic chips and fluidic setups.
  • Strong know-how in surface engineering and thus knowledge of surface properties of materials (such as glass, metal, and polymers).
  • Good knowledge of SolidWorks CAD design
  • Experience with programming tools such as Python, Labview, or similar.
  • Experience in kinematic designs, assembly and gluing techniques, and high precision production methods.

Following skills are a plus

  • Hands-on experience with microfluidic components and systems, exposure in the latest technological development specifically in microfluidic sample handling such as blood separation, particle sorting and transportation within lab-on-a-chip is a strong plus.
  • Experience with optical spectroscopy and imaging, and/or light interactions with fluid systems is a strong plus.
  • Experience in modeling and characterizing channels with various geometries catered for both Newtonian and Non-Newtonian fluids flowing through microfluidic chips and fluidic setups is a plus.
  • Experience in designing and building devices for sample handling such as extraction, preparation, separations, mixings, and other fluidic handling techniques and understanding the need for biochemistry detection is an added advantage.
  • Please note that we are unable to consider applicants without the correct requirements as described above.

Activities:

  • Design, build and test prototypes that enable fluidic sample handling and biomarker discovery including screening of blood cells, compound collections in flow chips. This includes microfluidic cells and chips that overcome optical detections, biological research and analytical challenges.
  • Plan, design, setup, and perform fluidic experiments in the lab. Translate the knowhow to the next step of scalable fluidic systems into a portable device.
  • Program and debug fluidic setup and instrumentation.
  • Collaborate tightly with scientists and develop a deep understanding of sample handling and molecular fingerprint identification challenges. Effectively communicate engineering trade-offs.
  • Employ empirical approaches in designing, selecting, fabricating various materials such as glass, polymers, silicon, metals, coatings with in-build circuits and control and monitoring systems.
  • Leverage external facilities for microfabrication, precision and standard machine workshop, 3D printing for device fabrication.
  • Conduct and document designs and inventions in mechanical engineering software 2D/3D CAD (SolidWorks), layout/schematic (e.g. Visio), maintain design data in SolidWorks PDM environment.
  • Perform Technological scouting, journal research, engage partners and suppliers, attend conferences to stay informed about new designs, techniques and strategies.
  • Decide the need to perform fluidic simulation using CFD tools (e.g. ANSYS Fluent, COMSOL, Flow Simulation).

We are considering talent outside of Switzerland and the EU.
